The Most Used Materials for Carports

Carports are one of the most convenient ways to protect a vehicle from the elements. As an exterior fixture, they don’t cost a lot of money, as building an attached garage would. It provides an affordable alternative to vehicle protection without the financial investment and intrusion on the property that more permanent fixtures require. Because carports are created with utility in mind, the different materials they’re constructed of each have their own specific purposes. Here are the two main materials used to create carports and the purpose for choosing each of them as a material on your own carport.

Aluminum

Aluminum carports are more affordable than their counterparts, and they often come in a wide range of colors. Because aluminum carports are so affordable, they’re probably the most common material chosen. While aluminum comes in many colors, so owners can select a color to compliment the color of the home and the rest of the property, it’s also less hardy than its counterpart and is more prone to rust and other types of weather damage. People choose aluminum carports when they want an affordable option that comes in many colors and styles, but that isn’t meant to last decades on end. It’s more of a semi-permanent solution for a somewhat temporary need.

Steel

Unlike aluminum carports which are prone to rust and weather damage, reinforced steel carports offer a greater sense of protection and longevity. Because steel isn’t prone to rust or weather damage, and because it’s stronger than aluminum, owners can count on it lasting many, many years without serious damages. While there aren’t as many style and color selections in steel as there are in aluminum carports, and though the price is heftier for steel, homeowners enjoy knowing their carport is a permanent fixture on the property and will serve well for decades to come.

At the end of the day, there are many styles of carports made of many different materials, but the most common are steel and aluminum carports. Each brings something different to the table for homeowners to enjoy, and if you select a carport based on your own preferences and needs you can’t go wrong.
